With Brisbane to be transformed by a diverse range of major infrastructure projects worth about $46 Billion over the next 6 years, there is a sense of positivity in the air. Not only will these construction projects create thousands of jobs during the construction phase, it will have a lasting on-going positive effect on the city and South Queensland well into the future.
This new-found economic optimism (and a comparatively resilient and affordable housing market) is already creating an influx of southerners north. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Queensland has overtaken Victoria to become the nation’s interstate migration capital. ABS demography director Anthony Grubb has commented that 2018 was the first time in four years that Queensland has overtaken Victoria in terms of net interstate movement. He also noted that the most common move between states was from New South Wales to Queensland, with 52,000 people making the move North.
The Queensland government is taking some credit for the surge in interstate migration, with Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad pointing to the “once-in-a-generation” $46 billion infrastructure spend and booming commodity industries as the root cause.
