We are looking for an industry-recognised energy leader to grow our Energy Sector practice — combining technical expertise, business development, team building, and project delivery at a national level.
About the role
As New Zealand accelerates its energy transition, this organisation is growing its role in the energy sector, building on proven strengths in advisory, programme leadership, delivery strategy, consenting pathways, procurement, and construction management.
Reporting to the Technical Director (Infrastructure), you will lead the growth of the Energy Sector presence nationally, with a focus on renewable energy, and expand project delivery from component-level to standalone capability.
Key responsibilities
Technical leadership
- Drive national growth in the energy sector, positioning the organisation as a trusted partner in generation, transmission, and distribution
- Develop and implement a clear sector strategy building on an established track record
- Lead and represent an internal Energy Working Group, engaging both staff and clients
Business development & client engagement
- Leverage a strong national network to generate value for new and existing clients
- Act as a senior trusted advisor across energy, infrastructure, and property projects from early development through delivery
- Contribute to major bids, proposals, and strategic pursuits
Team & capability development
- Build a national Energy Sector team including recruiting, training, and mentoring emerging leaders
- Partner with infrastructure, property, and advisory teams to deliver integrated client solutions
Thought leadership
- Represent the organisation through industry forums, conferences, and thought leadership activities
- Contribute to energy capability statements and market messaging
About you
- Senior technical leader with strong credibility in the energy sector, ideally with a focus on renewable energy — in particular solar and BESS
- In-depth knowledge and strong industry reputation across at least two core NZ energy areas: generation, transmission, or distribution
- Knowledge of adjacent areas (EV charging infrastructure, data centres) is advantageous
- Proven NZ track record driving delivery through technical expertise and strong relationships
- Demonstrated success aligning stakeholders and converting relationships into commercial results
- Self-starter comfortable with autonomy and accountability for sector growth
- Capable of operating as a trusted advisor at a senior client level
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification relevant to the energy sector (e.g. electrical or mechanical engineering, energy systems, infrastructure, or related discipline) — essential
- Industry certifications, professional registration, or chartership — highly desirable
Personal attributes
- Highly credible, commercially astute, and relationship-driven
- Strategic thinker with a pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset
- Collaborative leader with a client-focused culture
- Motivated by opportunity, growth, and the ability to shape a national practice
Why this role?
- Shape and grow a national Energy Sector service offering from the ground up
- Backed by highly capable, established delivery teams providing depth and execution capability
- Significant and growing market opportunity driven by New Zealand's energy transition
- Flexible location across New Zealand — offices in Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Christchurch, Nelson, Dunedin, and Queenstown
- Collaborative, high-trust environment with genuine scope for impact
