Strathfield Council is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West. The Council area comprises approximately 14 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents with a projected population of over 80,000 by 2036.

The Role
The newly created position of Director Legal and Civic, will play a crucial role in linking the Legal & Civic Directorate with the General Manager, ensuring the Council’s objectives are delivered efficiently, effectively, and to the highest quality.

This position oversees key areas within the directorate and leads a team of professionals dedicated to executing Council priorities. An additional responsibility of the role is managing the budgetary framework, ensuring alignment with the Community Strategic Plan, Delivery Program, Operational Plans, and associated strategies.

Alongside these responsibilities, the role holds the secondary title of General Counsel. In this capacity, the Director will manage all of Council’s legal affairs, providing strategic and operational legal advice to the Executive, Management Team, and broader Council.

Focused upon delivering quality outcomes, we are seeking a highly motivated individual with well-developed stakeholder management and advocacy skills and the ability to interact with all levels of government.

Expert knowledge and familiarity of relevant legislation within the Local Government context is essential, as is a deep knowledge and understanding of the changing social, political, and economic issues facing the local government sector.
 
Lastly, a University degree in Law and admission as a Solicitor/ Barrister of the Supreme Court of NSW with a unrestricted practicing certificate in NSW is required.
